There is a fantastic article in the recent edition of The Economist, link at the end, showing again what looks to be a simply designed policy measure designed to increase female labor participation rates in Brazil. I have to say, some of the greatest poverty fighting models over the last 10 years or so have come through, on the surface, relatively simple measures – conditional cash transfers (comply with x and you will get a cash transfer) and cell-phones for transfering and storing money. Now putting this all into practice is another story but it is being accomplished and deserves its due.
Next up I will talk about a teacher retention scheme in India that again is pretty simple in its design and shows great promise the world over.
